Spring cleaning equals recycling and not more pollution
Spring cleaning is an annual ritual that a lot of folks religiously follow and many of them end up trashing a lot of stuff that may have been of use earlier, but is not worth retaining anymore. This also includes stuff like CFL light bulbs as well as old toys that would invariably go into the trash bin and then into the landfills, which is not the most environmentally responsible or conscious way of going about things. This is why there are some tips that could come in handy for those who want to get things recycled instead of mindlessly trashing them and tossing them into the waste bin.
For starters, you will have to separate stuff as per their types or categories that will make recycling and potential recycling a whole lot easier. For one, places like Salvation Army and Goodwill accept new or gently used clothes which you would have anyway trashed. These organizations have special tie ups with textile mills that accept ratty old clothes from these agencies. If you have old makeup containers, you need not worry about throwing these away as a lot of makeup companies have stepped up efforts to recycle these containers. Companies like Kiehl’s and MAC accept these containers at their retail locations and in the case of Origins, you can even deposit makeup containers of other brands to be recycled by it.
When it comes to cleaning products used at home, you would do well to toss these into the town’s household hazardous waste facility as these are noxious and toxic in nature. This is also true of expired medication which should never be flushed into the toilet as it contaminates soil water. Some pharmacies have special recycling facilities that can be made good use of. In the case of CFL bulbs, you can drop them at Home Depot which has a CFL bulb recycling program. In case of old toys, you can try selling them off or perhaps donating them to an orphanage, a church jumble sale or perhaps give it to Goodwill.
All of these measures ensure that you do spring cleaning in a socially and ecologically responsible way.
